DNA Source

The human DNA code (genome) contains 3.1647 billion chemical nucleotide bases (A, C, T, and G).

Approximately, 99.9% of these nucleotide sequences are the same in all people.  It is this 0.1% difference that we analyze in paternity testing.

Hair

Most people believe that hair can be used as a source of DNA for a paternity test. This answer is yes and no. If the hair has been pulled out the roots or follicles will be attached, we can extract DNA from the roots and use it to determine paternity.

If the hair is found on a brush, comb or pillow it will not contain DNA. This is due to the life cycle of hair. As the hair ages and prepares to fall out, the nucleus and DNA contents are degraded. This will make hair unusable for paternity testing.

 Forensic Paternity and DNA Testing

We understand that you may not want to confront the other person or the other person may be deceased.  In order to help you, we have the ability to extract DNA from many alternative sources of DNA.  However, it will cost a little more (see below) to extract the DNA from any of these samples.  We have compiled a list of alternative DNA samples that we have used successfully in the past.

DNA is very pervasive and is left behind on many things. This table will aid you in acquiring DNA that can be used for testing.  The best way to store any of these samples is in a paper envelope. DO NOT use plastic bags.  DNA stored dry, in a paper envelope, will be stable for months. DNA stored moist in a plastic bag will not last very long.  If you have any questions about any or these samples in the table or a sample that may not be listed, please feel free call us toll free at 866-344-8378 or via email at scientist@paternityexperts.com.

Extracting DNA from a forensic sample can sometimes be time consuming.  It takes on average about 2- 5 business days to generate a DNA profile depending on the complexity of the sample.  .

3.  or you can just send in the semen stained sample.

Please note:  semen samples can often be contaminated with female DNA (i.e. condoms) please use caution when collecting the semen to prevent any female DNA carry-over.   Please call the office if you have any questions.
